Case History: Fire at the new Agroindustrial Center in Bologna



An enormous fire struck the new agroindustrial center in Bologna during the central phase of its construction.
The installation, which covers an area of approximately 600,000 square meters, includes various edifices constructed with different materials, all of which are connected by an internal road and ample parking, respectively for:

- Fruit and vegetable market
- Flower and nursery market
- Fish market
- Milk and cheese market
- Convention center and hotel
- Production area
- Office center
- Warehouse
- Workshops, technical areas and services

The fire broke out at approximately 12:30pm on the12th of October, 1995, on the roof of the south wing of the building destined to be a fruit and vegetable market, where waterproofing made of bituplastic sheathing was being done to the eaves.
The building covers an area of approximately 60,500 square meters, with 8,200 square meters of lateral cantilevered roofing. The fire (which broke out during the lunch break) was seen by the building site master, who gave the alarm. The Fire Department arrived on the scene of the accident at approximately 12:50pm.
